We are delighted to share some exciting news, Ben Locke and Chris Harwood have successfully demonstrated the specialist skills and technical knowledge required to become accredited 3M™ Endorsed Building Window Film Installers.

This is a fantastic achievement for Ben and Chris and an important development for our Signwrite Studios business and customers. It means we can offer even greater confidence to organisations looking for professionally specified and expertly installed 3M™ solar control, safety and security window films.

For retailers, particularly luxury and high-end stores, the possibilities are significant. Large areas of glazing create bright interiors, showcase products and help stores feel open and welcoming. However, that same glazing can leave a business exposed to solar heat, ultraviolet light, accidental breakage and opportunistic crime.

What does the 3M™ endorsement mean?

The 3M™ Endorsed Building Window Film Installer Programme is designed to develop and assess the practical skills required to install products from the 3M™ Building Window Films range.

The 3M programme includes hands-on training followed by a practical assessment. Its aims include creating a consistent installation process, improving application standards and giving customers greater confidence when selecting an installer.

For Ben and Chris, achieving this endorsement required much more than learning how to apply film to glass. A professional installation depends on careful preparation, accurate measurement, correct product selection, excellent finishing and an understanding of how different films interact with different types of glazing.

Every project is different. The size, orientation, condition and specification of the glass must be considered alongside the customer’s objectives. In a premium retail environment, the visual standard is particularly important. The completed installation should complement the architecture rather than distract from it.

Ben and Chris have demonstrated the knowledge and practical ability required to undertake this specialist work to the standard expected by 3M.

New possibilities for high-end retail

The appearance of a luxury retail store is never accidental. Every surface, display, light source and sightline contributes to the customer experience. Storefront glazing must invite people inside, present products attractively and support the identity of the brand.

Any improvement made to that glazing therefore needs to be effective without looking intrusive. Depending on the product selected, window film can be highly transparent and preserve the appearance of the glass while providing valuable additional performance.

A professional survey allows us to understand the existing glazing, surrounding environment and commercial priorities before recommending a suitable product. The right answer may involve solar control, enhanced safety, additional security or a film that combines several benefits.

Managing heat, glare and ultraviolet exposure

Glass-fronted stores can become uncomfortable when exposed to strong sunlight. Solar heat gain may create hot areas near the windows, place additional pressure on cooling systems and make conditions less comfortable for customers and employees.

3M™ Sun Control Window Films are designed to help reject solar heat and reduce glare while continuing to allow natural light into the building. Certain products are highly transparent, making them particularly suitable where maintaining the original appearance of the glazing is a priority.

The 3M™ Prestige Series, for example, is designed to combine high light transmission with effective heat rejection. According to 3M, products within the range can reject up to 97% of the sun’s infrared light and block up to 99.9% of harmful ultraviolet rays. Actual performance depends on the particular film and glazing combination selected.

This can be highly relevant in fashion boutiques, jewellers, furniture showrooms, galleries and other premium spaces. Reducing the effects of solar heat and ultraviolet exposure can help create a more comfortable environment while helping to protect displayed products, fabrics, artwork, furnishings and interior finishes from premature fading.

Improving glazing safety

Broken glass can create a serious hazard. Accidental impact, extreme weather, spontaneous breakage or criminal activity may cause fragments to separate and scatter into occupied areas.

3M™ Safety Window Films are designed to help hold broken glass together. This can reduce the risk presented by flying or falling fragments and may help the damaged glazing remain more contained until it can be made safe or replaced.

Glass Safety film can be relevant to doors, entrance areas, partitions and low-level glazing. Subject to a suitable survey and the applicable requirements, it may provide a practical way to upgrade certain existing installations without replacing the complete glazing system.

Strengthening security without spoiling the appearance

Security is naturally a major concern for retailers carrying high-value or easily transported stock. Jewellery stores, designer boutiques and technology retailers may be particularly conscious of the vulnerability of glazed storefronts and entrance doors.

Security window film does not make glass indestructible and should not replace alarms, access control, shutters or other appropriate measures. Its role is to help hold broken glass together and make penetration more difficult, potentially delaying access and providing additional response time. When used as part of an appropriately designed system, 3M™ Safety & Security Window Films can help strengthen vulnerable glazing while preserving the open appearance of a storefront. This is particularly valuable for luxury brands that want to improve protection without placing visible bars or heavy barriers across the customer-facing elevation.

Some applications use film together with a 3M™ Impact Protection Attachment System, which helps secure the filmed glass to the frame. The correct solution depends on the glass, framing system, identified threat and intended outcome, making professional assessment as important as the installation itself.

Blast-mitigation window film for higher-risk buildings

The possibilities extend beyond accidental breakage and opportunistic crime. Certain 3M™ Safety & Security Window Films, when used as part of an appropriately specified system with a 3M™ Impact Protection Attachment System, can also help reduce glass-related risks during blast events.

During an explosion, blast pressure may send glass fragments into occupied areas at high speed. A correctly specified blast-mitigation film and attachment system is designed to help hold broken glass together, reducing the likelihood of loose fragments becoming hazardous projectiles.

This type of solution may be relevant to high-value jewellery and designer stores, banks, financial premises, government and Ministry of Defence-related buildings, embassies, transport locations, critical infrastructure and other properties where glazing protection forms part of a wider security strategy.

It is important to be clear that window film does not make glazing blast-proof. It cannot prevent an explosion or guarantee that a window will remain intact. Its purpose is to help manage the behaviour of the glass if a blast occurs, with the aim of reducing glass-related injuries and limiting damage.

Blast-mitigation projects require a detailed, project-specific assessment. The existing glass, framing system, pane dimensions, selected film, attachment method and identified threat level must all be considered. Sensitive government, defence or high-security environments may also require input from structural engineers, security consultants and other relevant specialists.

Our 3M™ endorsement gives us the installation skills and product knowledge to contribute to these specialist projects, working alongside clients, specifiers and professional advisers to install an approved system correctly.

Why professional installation matters

Even the best window film can only perform as intended when it has been correctly selected and installed.

The glass must be thoroughly prepared, correct film chosen, and the film must be accurately cut, positioned and finished. Close attention must be paid to edges, seals, frames and any attachment system included within the specification. The installer must also understand film and glazing compatibility.

These details are especially important in high-end retail, where an untidy finish could distract from the architecture and customer experience. Work may also need to be scheduled carefully around opening hours, deliveries, visual merchandising and public access.

Ben and Chris’s accreditation gives clients the reassurance that their installation will be undertaken by professionals who have demonstrated their abilities through the 3M™ programme.

Extended manufacturer-backed warranty protection

Eligible installations can also benefit from valuable manufacturer-backed warranty protection.

Depending on the product, application, glazing orientation and applicable programme terms, cover can extend for up to 15 years on selected internally applied films and up to 10 years on selected exterior films.

When the relevant 3M warranty conditions are satisfied, cover can include both the film and qualifying installation labour, providing additional reassurance for the customer. Warranty periods and conditions vary between product ranges and applications, so we will explain the cover applicable to each proposed installation before work begins.

A proud achievement and an exciting next step
